Gallery Description:
As a landscape and cityscape painter, I want to visually convey the best of both. The land is our common denominator, it is the source of our existence, for it feeds, clothes, shelters, and even buries us, and it is biblically connected to our beginnings through Adam and Eve. I wish to pay homage, give tribute to a Mother Earth who can be serene, and nurturing, and instill peace in us through her beauty. I want to paint the tops of trees in English parks, forming lacy fingers against the sky, the colors of snow at the St. Petersburg Winter Palace, and lush Japanese maple trees in autumn splendor. I was fortunate see the rocky caverns of China’s Yangtze River before it was flooded to build a dam, and I have been in some of the glorious forests of the Loire Valley in France. All have contributed to my work, but I know that no one can truly capture the enormity of Nature’s beauty.
Cities can be beautiful too, for they give evidence of man’s ability to live and work together, to tolerate diversity, to form communities, neighborhoods and find kinship together. The drama of city lights indicates small and large scale neighborhood homes and industry, dotted with bits of nature, bordered by encroaching high rises.
My paintings attempt to connect with people, their land and their structures. Through my travels, I have learned how important it is to preserve the very best of the rural and urban. We must value and preserve the wonderful works of great architects and designers, yet we must also treasure and respect farmlands, forests, and wetlands.
